Raising Guinea Fowl
Guinea fowl are one of the most unusual birds around and their chicks are no different. Be sure to not startle them as keets and adults are very excitable, usually running around with no idea where they are going or what they are doing. Because of this, they are prone to accidents, such as dislocated legs, which often results in death if it occurs at an early age.
Keets will need to stay in a brooder for at least 6 weeks. Keep them in a large enough brooder so that they can get away from the heat lamp as needed. Guineas need a higher protein feed than chickens but do okay on regular poultry diets. Keets need a 24% protein ratio such as the starter feed. After eight weeks, the keets can be fed a 16%-layer feed.
Adult Guineas
Guineas sound an alarm whenever anything unusual occurs on the farm. Most people find this noise to be a nuisance, others find it to be an effective tool for protecting the farm and make guinea fowl the farmyard “watchdogs.” The loud noise of the guineas has also been shown to discourage rodents from invading the area.
They are also great pest control. Flocks of guineas can kill and eat mice, along with small rats. Guineas eat mainly insects and can eat large amounts without affecting garden vegetables or flowers. They have been used to control ticks, grasshoppers, flies, and crickets; flocks have also been known to attack snakes. Additionally, guinea fowl can be raised for meat and egg production. The meat of young guineas is tender and tastes like that of wild game while being lean and rich in essential amino acids. Guinea eggs can be eaten just like chicken eggs (and should be collected daily if not used for hatching purposes).
Raising Turkeys
Baby turkeys, or turkey chicks, need to stay in a brooder for at least 6 weeks. It takes 10 days before they can regulate their body temperature. You should have them in a large enough brooder so they can get away from the heat lamp as needed. Turkey chicks require more protein than regular chicks, so give a complete feed with 30% protein until they are 8 weeks old. At 8 weeks you can switch to 30% to 20% protein. Be sure young birds also know where feed and water are located. Water must be available at all times. If your chicks go without water, slowly reintroduce water so they do not over drink. Once they have rehydrated, give them free access to water again.
Once chicks are 6 weeks old, they can be transitioned from brooder to coop. Because of their size, turkeys will need slightly more space than other poultry counterparts. Adult turkeys do great with a group of at least three to six birds. If you choose to free-range your turkey flock, you will need a predator-proof fenced area for nighttime. Heritage hens are generally productive for 5-7 years and toms for 3-5 years. It takes at least seven months for them to reach their mature weight. Turkey eggs are known to be just as nutritious as chicken eggs with a strong shell and larger yolk. Hens lay an average of two eggs per week when in season. The average weight for a Bronze tom is 25 lbs and the young turkey hen is 16 lbs, this can vary either way depending on turkey and feed.
